Forest School in the Heart of Wiltshire
What is Forest School?
The aim of Forest School is to encourage and inspire individuals of any age through positive outdoor experiences. Children participate in engaging, motivating and achievable tasks in an outdoor environment. Forest School is a regular, long term and fun programme which allows participants to learn about the natural environment, how to handle risk and use their own initiative to solve problems. It also aims to develop self awareness, self regulation independence, good social communication skills self esteem and confidence.
Forest school sessions
Children should always wear appropriate clothing; Wellies, Water proofs (trousers and coat or all in one), long sleeves and trousers are advisable even in summer, this reduces insect bites and irritation from stinging nettles. Adults should also dress appropriately as they are taking part in activities as well, and setting a good example. A first aid kit is always taken, along with a kit bag containing; a tarpaulin (for shelter), rope, scissors, spare clothing, kitchen roll, water and a warm/cold drink to replenish energy levels when active. A mobile phone/walkie talkie is always carried in case of emergencies.
Safety at Forest School
Risk assessments are carried out and regularly updated. Children always know and are made aware of the activities' boundary, they are all taught that when they hear the leaders whistle to stop and return to the group. Simple games are played which reinforce this.
Sessions are designed around the needs of the group and are always child led. They are centred around a theme or story, activities include den building, constructing animal homes, making broom sticks and creating environmental art, to name but a few of our activities. All Hedgehog Room children will get the opportunity to participate in these sessions. If you have any questions we will be happy to answer them.
